Death at ISP?

Heard there was another inmate death a couple of days ago? at ISP?

Whistle Blowers

I read this morning on Jen Wagner's Hoosier Political Report (http://www.hoosierpoliticalreport.com/) that the state Department of Labor is suing a Ft. Wayne hotel after they fired a manager who reported safety violations there.

I wonder how many similar lawsuits the state could file against itself for all the "whistle blowers" who have been fired or forced out for the same thing, in IDOC alone?

JDD, his henchmen, and his lapdogs have made sure that anyone who feels the need to point out the serious problems in this department thinks twice and keep their mouths shut. Even the most trivial concerns or suggestions for improvement label you as a troublemaker. How many of the best, competent people have been forced out because they've tried to point out problems? How many people have been sucked into JDD asking for their "ideas" and participated in those ridiculous "Skip Level" meetings with him, then find they are on the list of troublemakers? Those meetings are nothing less than a chance for JDD to convince the youngest and most naive new employees that he is the "best corrections commissioner in America", and to spot the troublemakers, whether they are new or veteran staff. Point out a problem to JDD, and he will be on the phone to your Superintendent. Point out a problem or a concern to your Superintendent, and you are on the list. Anyone who finds themselves on the list is transferred, pushed around, forced out, or fired.

How many Wrongful Terminations has HR had to deal with?

Mitch TV

(Someone made the following comment last evening under "Hail & Farewell", but I've placed it here as a separate post. And if you can't enough of 'Mitch TV', check out Jennifer Wagner's great post about it on her new blog, Hoosier Political Report: http://www.hoosierpoliticalreport.com/2008/05/on-the-teevee-when-at-first-yo.html - P.H.)

"Get ready for "Mitch TV"

No matter what happens in the episodes, the campaign message always comes through. Campaign consultant Mark Lubbers produces the show along with producer Rick Thompson. The two follow Daniels on the campaign trail and at official functions.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Mitch Daniels re-election campaign launches a statewide reality show featuring the Republican governor this weekend. The first of 12 episodes of "Mitch TV" is a behind-the-scenes look at Election night 2004 when Mitch Daniels won his first term as governor. Five episodes of the half-hour reality show will air in June. Seven episodes are scheduled to air in the weeks leading up to the November election. Campaign consultant Mark Lubbers produces the show along with producer Rick Thompson. The two follow Daniels on the campaign trail and at official functions.

No matter what happens in the episodes, the campaign message always comes through. "And there's no doubt there's a campaign objective and it clearly serves the campaign's objective and the governor's objective to win an election," said Lubbers.

It is a concept that Democrat Jill Long Thompson can't afford to copy." He can put all the infomercials on TV he wants. It doesn't change the reality that his policies have been a dramatic failure," said Thompson spokesman Jeff Harris.

Meantime, the Daniels campaign argues that the format is only effective if you have a candidate willing and able to withstand the scrutiny of an ever-present camera. The first five weeks of "Mitch TV" will cost the Daniels campaign $200,000. It airs in five Indiana television markets and on Louisville, Kentucky television. Lubbers said it's an inexpensive use of campaign dollars when compared to 30-second commercials, but he won't know for sure until November.

PREF

"Do we want things to get better? Then WE will have to expose what is wrong. The only way to fix a problem is to know what the problem is. At this point the Daniel’s administration has made sure to cover up the problems or white wash them and make everything look as if it is being addressed when in reality nothing is being done, as is happening at Plainfield Reentry."

Boy whoever wrote that was RIGHT ON! PREF is a PERFECT EXAMPLE of the idiotic incompetent covered up mess that has become of this department. Invented by a clown and managed by a lapdog! And what is the result??? Does ANYONE in this department think that the PREF is doing anything different or better than other facilities? NO! But if it isnt CO pushing for offenders to be placed there (and I thought they had to qualify?), then it's the offenders who either want to go even though they don't qualify..then they get accepted, or they don't want to go because they heard its about the no programs and mess..and THEY get put there anyway...or the ones who want to go and it would be a good thing but then they DON"T get accepted even though they meet all the qualifications!! Then they change the criteria anyway. Why?? Just to get better statistics??? CLIFF and PLUS and so much of JDDs crap is pure crap but PREF is the worst of it all.

Not Enough

Its not enough for word to just get out to people about this site. We have to keep it alive. It won't be alive if people don't post. A few peopel have and that is good. Who ever wrote before that we need to hear about what is going on and what you know at your facility was right. This will die if we don't take care of it and that means JDD wins.

The Choice Is Ours

(The following was a comment made this morning under "Hail and Farewell", but it says many important things, so I have placed it as it's own post. - P.H.)

Somehow word of this page needs to get out to all of those who were visiting TDW’s, at least those from the different facilities who care. At this point this blog page has been up several days and has only 19 comments.

Considering the IWP overcrowding, Pendleton boys in the ceiling at the school over the weekend and the death at Putnamville, one would have thought comments would start to appear. There are incidents happening daily, but is everyone getting so harden by the understaffing and lack of safety, security and management skills that they no longer see what is going on? Is it just becoming routine that people die in prison? Or that students con an officer to take them to Recreation (sounds like a perfectly harmless request) then climb into the ceiling so they can steal ink and other items from the school for tattooing. Last, are Indiana prisons so over crowed that women inmates are forced to sleep on blow up bedding? If that is the case do these prisoners have clothing, food, bedding or other necessities?

Before TWD shut down I read people talking about shortages of daily usage items. Are all the facilities short on these items and what items are we talking about? Laundry soap, paper towels, bleach, what specific items? Yes, it is June and everyone knows supplies don’t show up until July, but HOW MENY WEEK/MONTHS have you been without these supplies already. Being short by a few days is one thing, MONTHS is ridiculous!

What I am saying is, the current treatment is inhumane. I buy my dog food that he likes, it is healthy, I take him to the vet when he is sick and given him good care. He sleeps on clean bedding, eats and drinks from a clean bowl, and gets plenty of exercise within the confines of my backyard fence with me watching him. In other words, I treat my dog better then most of the prisoners in the IDOC.

If we have come to a point that we do not recognize that overcrowding, students crawling in the ceiling and the dead of a prisoner does not warrant investigation as well as a HUGE red flag going up to the administration, we are in dire need! As employees we have to make sure everyone is aware what is going on.

Why do you think roll call was stopped? Yes, to save the state paying 15 minutes of over time, but also to keep those working in the facilities from knowing what was going on in the facilities! The administration through doing this would control what was released to the public. But the real downside is that is makes the facility UNSAFE for staff as well as the rest of the inmates. Upper management does not work or live at the facilities, so the problem is not in their face, therefore they don’t care. If they are not going to advise incoming staff, I suggest here is a place to let everyone one know.

Do we want things to get better? Then WE will have to expose what is wrong. The only way to fix a problem is to know what the problem is. At this point the Daniel’s administration has made sure to cover up the problems or white wash them and make everything look as if it is being addressed when in reality nothing is being done, as is happening at Plainfield Reentry.

So folks, the choice is ours, you can come to this page, look and see what has been said, then leave. Or you can start letting us know what is really going on. It is in our hands to make the prison a safe and secure environment. First we need to have the facts and know what is going on within the walls, next we need a plan of action, and third pray that in November the votes go the right way. But we need to get our act together and make this page work for us.

No!

9:11pm made a comment to the previous post and said this is dead. No! We can't let that happen. I agree we have to keep letting JDD and all the lapdogs know that we are together in our disgust of what he has done and is doing to this dept. I was fooled once by Mitch, but now I have seen the truth behind his ads and he does not care about this state. I won't be fooled again, and I don't want others to be fooled.

I miss TDW it was easier but I like and apprecate what this is. If this dies, the chance for us all to communicate and stay toghether dies. Thats what JDD and his henchmen would like to see so they are off the hook for their mismanagement: they want to divide and conquer. No! No! No!

Don't let this die

This is too important to let go. I went to Hotmail and got a new account just so I could post to this. I'm not going to do it from my home email and wnat this to be anonymous. I don't know who you are but from what I've seen so far I think you are doing a good thing and for the right reasons and I for one am glad.

People are replying with comments and that is good, but I hope everyone who read TDW will go ahead like this and just take a couple minutes to get a Hotmail or other email account and send in info. It's true everyone: this will only be what WE make it. Folks, please don't let this die, we have to keep the pressue on JDD and make sure he knows he cannot beat us! WE are the professionals of this department and WE will work together to fix it!!

Thank you.

Putnamville Inmate Pronounced Dead at Hospital

See on Channel 8's website that an offender was pronounced dead after "fellow inmates found him lying unresponsive in bed"

The inmates found the dorm officer and told him that the offender "didn't look quite right and was foaming at the mouth"

Ironic

It is interesting to me that Mitch Daniels (to his credit) has lessened the hassle of going to the license branches. However, when accessing the welfare system simply does not work at all, there is no sense of urgency and just spin and denial from Mitch Roob and company. This is the cynicism of the Daniels administration, which knows that a broad swath of Hoosiers really don't care whether eligible poor people can get their benefits or not.

IJCF Superintendent

(This was posted as a comment under Hail & Farewell, but I have copied it here so that comments on it won't get lost. It sure is worthy of comment! P. H.)

IJCF Superintend is leaving as of June 2. WOW! So another Superintendent at IJCF is biting the dust! Only according to staff he chooses to leave. Can’t say as I blame the guy.

Let’s consider these facts:

1) Having J. David Donahue as a boss.
2) Being scared to death about the DOJ audit.
3) Being held responsible for the DOJ audit.
4) Being fired because of the DOJ audit (even though JDD and John Nally was and is responsible for all the problems at IJCF).
5) Having his reputation and good name tarnish because JDD has to have someone to shift the blame off too. (Sound familiar, I’m sure he has seen it happen many times before and knows he must get out of IJCF before he has no reputation left.)

Again I say:DITCH MITCH IN NOVEMEBER and his little dog too!!

What we don't have

Ok I'll bite. What have I got to lose, my job? Maybe if that happens I'll just go sign up for one of all the many many many jobs that Mitch says he's brought to the state. But of course those don't pay enough to pay the bills, so I guess I sure do hope this is legit and I don't lose my job. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have some JDD mess to clean up everyday.

I am sorry to see the old blog go. But I agree that it was a good thing and got people talking. We all still have to hide in the shadows though. I've been in DOC for more than 15 years and Ive never seen the administration treat employees as bad as this, like no one and nothing they have matters. "Appreciation week" what a joke! Same with the spot bonuses: they go to a few favorites. I guess. I guess if the supt knows you and you kiss enough butt?? But if just do your job like your supposed to, a bonus isn't for you. That's ok, I just want people around me doing their jobs. But it makes people sore when they see bonuses going to some people and for what? It doesn't motivate them it just makes them angrier.

But that isn't what I wanted to post about. Wow, RSM would be all over me for COMPLAINING wouldn't he? The last thing I read on the blog yesterday was about Pam Cline and what a good leader she was for the department. I didnt know her or work for her, but whoever wrote that described what kind of LEADERSHIP we don't have in the department right now. That is what we need in a commissioner and all the executive staff and superintendents too. I hope when we DITCH MITCH IN NOVEMBER that we will get some people back in charge!

Hail and Farewell

If you are reading this, you know how you got here. You know how we all got here.

"Knuckle-Knocked Out: Rumors swirl around departure of DOC flack" was first posted for comment on the blog "Taking Down Words" on July 13 2007.

Now ten months, 9 days, and 2170+ comments later, that thread is still going and going and going.... But TDW isn't. After graciously patronizing that thread which had taken on a life of it's own, Jennifer Wagner (a.k.a. Ms. TDW) is discontinuing the TDW site, and the "Knuckle-Knock" thread will be retired along with it.

The "Knuckle-Knock" thread obviously held a lot of interest for a lot of people; it generated a lot of discussion about a lot of different issues. The discussion went far beyond the original topic of "Java-Gate", and even though TDW published several other posts about various goings-on in the DOC, people always came back to "Knuckle-Knocked" to air their concerns, frustrations, and gripes. It was a safe place for people to vent, and a good gathering spot to get information.

Hopefully this blog can pick up where that thread leaves off.

Ms. TDW Jennifer Wagner is taking her considerable talents into a new direction, hosting Hoosier Political Report, a new site she describes as "a bipartisan (!) clearinghouse of Hoosier political happenings". Check it out at http://www.hoosierpoliticalreport.com/.

Anyone and everyone who appreciated the "Knuckle-Knocked" thread on TDW owes Jen a huge thanks for bringing us together and giving us a voice. But if we want to keep a good thing going, we are going to have to stand on our own now and do it ourselves.
